MONDO SHOW began as a sketch comedy revue staged in Los
Angeles by a group of young, twisted, funny, highly disobedient talent. From
this pool spawned a caustic brand of satiric theater in a smart -- at times
tasteless -- collection of sketches. It was also an audio/visual show that
implemented musical numbers, audio sketches, and large screen projections
intertwining with the live performance.
The first show, simply entitled Mondo Show, was staged in the
fall of 2000 at a hole-in-the-wall theater in Hollywood. The theater contained
50 beaten-up seats and a small stage that was shared with another production
that had something to do with S&M. (Sketch comedy, S&M, and angry feminism are
the most popular themes in L.A. theatre). Mondo Show
ran for six weeks, garnering a cult following.
The following year saw Bride of Mondo Show with all-new material
in a much more lavish West Hollywood venue called The Globe Playhouse. Modeled
after the historic theater of the same name, there was spacious seating, wooden
balconies, and the smell of Shakespeare in the air. Once he was removed, the
cast and crew set up shop. Bride of Mondo Show ran for four weeks.
The shows were written and directed by
Ryan Garns and produced by
Christine
Rosenberry and Ryan Garns. Original music was written by
Ally Schoepel.
The cast for the first show was
Forrest Harding, Liesl Hetzke, Monique Jones,
Niki Magarity, Matt McCann, Michael Patrick McGill, Melyssa Peters and
Jake
West. Chris Stacy joined the
Bride
cast in place of Jake West.
Will there be another stage show? Mondo Show 3-D? Or Mondo Show vs.
Mothra? Who knows. Perhaps when the scratch can be put together, the
writer can kick booze, and the cast and crew agree to drop their restraining
orders, Mondo Show will tread the boards again. In the meantime, mondoshow.com
can be tapped for original, web-only comedy as well as archived material.
